Inherited a Vintage Gold Ring? Its Value May Go Beyond Scrap Gold

Inherited a Vintage Gold Ring? Its Value May Go Beyond Scrap Gold

By Tor Arne Tyberg, Daglig leder

An inherited ring can be valuable in several ways. Its memories belong to the owner, while a resale assessment considers the metal, gemstones and finished piece. The first question is what you actually have.

Start with the marks and construction

585 usually indicates 14-carat gold, containing 58.5% gold. 750 indicates 18-carat gold and 75% gold. Look for a maker's mark or signature inside the band, together with signs of repairs. Our glossary explains 14-carat gold.

Worn or unclear marks can be investigated alongside the material. At OBA, our methods include XRF analysis of metal composition. The result relates to the area tested; markings, construction and possible coatings are also considered.

Gold value and jewellery value

Weight and fineness provide the starting point for metal value. A maker's name, distinctive design or desirable gemstones may add value to the finished piece. Examine the setting, proportions and goldsmithing before considering melting it down.

For a plain ring without a distinctive design or valuable stones, gold content will often be central. An older ring by a sought-after maker should also be compared with sales of similar jewellery. Our gold and silver calculator, in Norwegian, gives a preliminary estimate based on the weight and fineness entered.

What can the gemstones tell you?

Gemstone identity, weight, cut, colour, clarity and any treatments affect the assessment. The setting may conceal parts of the stone. A mobile photograph alone cannot establish a reliable diamond grade. Our diamond ring guide explains the characteristics examined.

Keep the history with the ring

An old box, receipt, engraving or information about where the ring was bought can help with identification. Record what the family knows, distinguishing documented information from stories passed down verbally.

Check the shank for wear, resizing and solder repairs, and look for damage to the setting. These affect both wearability and resale value.
