Diamond rings: what determines their value?

Diamond rings: what determines their value?

By Tor Arne Tyberg, Daglig leder og fagansvarlig • Updated 14. October 2026

A diamond ring can be a simple, timeless piece or an interesting vintage jewel. At Østlandet Brukt & Antikk, we assess the complete ring: diamond quality, gold content, construction, period, maker and overall design.

The four Cs

Diamonds are traditionally assessed using four characteristics: Carat, Cut, Color and Clarity.

  • Carat: gemstone weight. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Equal carat weights do not necessarily mean equal values.
  • Cut: the quality of cutting affects how a diamond reflects light.
  • Colour: for conventional white diamonds, the amount of body colour is assessed.
  • Clarity: internal and external characteristics are considered according to their number, size and position.

The complete ring matters

An older setting, fine goldsmithing, substantial gold content, a maker's mark or distinctive design may add interest beyond the metal and stone alone. Assess an older piece as a complete jewel before considering its scrap value.

What do 585 and 750 mean?

585 normally indicates 14-carat gold, containing 58.5% gold. 750 indicates 18-carat gold and 75% gold. These gold fineness descriptions should be distinguished from the diamond's carat weight.

Gold can be yellow, white or rose according to its alloy and treatment. OBA uses XRF analysis as one tool for examining metal composition. Our XRF guide explains its use and limitations.

Vintage rings have their own character

Settings, craftsmanship and period details can help explain how a piece was made. The appeal of an older ring may lie in its individual design.

Inherited a diamond ring?

Keep boxes, papers and known history with the ring. Marks inside the band can give information about gold content or maker, while the stones and construction require closer examination. Avoid melting, dismantling or major alteration before the complete piece is assessed.
