A. Lange & Söhne is a German watch brand and manufacture in Glashütte, Saxony. Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his workshop there in 1845. The historical business and the present company should not be treated as one uninterrupted production line.

Historical workshop and new beginning

The brand states that the business was nationalised after the Second World War. Walter Lange re established the name in 1990, and the first new collection appeared four years later. These dates describe the business and do not automatically date a particular watch.

Identification

The maker states that its current watches are developed and built with manufacture movements in Glashütte. When assessing an older example, examine model name, serial number, movement, case, dial and documentation together. A loose dial, signature or engraving is not enough to prove that the complete watch is original.
