Ane Haugen (Gravør Gathe)
Ane Haugen, also identified as Ane Haugen Gathe, is a jewellery designer, goldsmith and hand engraver. She runs Gravør Gathe with a workshop in Telemark, Norway. Her own account documents craft qualifications in both goldsmithing and hand engraving. She traces her interest in engraving to meeting Malcolm Appleby in Scotland in 2009.
Engraving as a distinct craft
The workshop describes traditional hand engraving, seal engraving and relief engraving. A seal design is cut in reverse so that its wax impression reads correctly. In relief engraving, the background is removed to leave the motif standing above it. These are different effects, although both may be used on jewellery.
What does a name establish?
An engraving commission can involve an object made by another manufacturer. Distinguish the designer, maker and engraver. Hand-engraved initials may be an owner's monogram and should not automatically be interpreted as a maker's mark. Order papers, earlier photographs and documented workshop history aid attribution. Neither decorative engraving nor a similar name alone is sufficient to assign an unidentified jewel to Haugen.
