Ås green glassworks (Aas glassverk)
The Ås green glassworks, also written Aas, was located in Sandsvær, Norway. Nasjonalarkivet's Arkivmagasinet records operation from 1748 to 1764. It produced green glass, especially bottles. Production was subsequently taken over by Hadeland glassworks.
The name should be distinguished from Åsnes glassworks. The establishment of Hadeland must also be separated from its production start: it was established in 1762 and began production in 1765. The earlier date should therefore not simply be used as the closing year for Ås.
For collectors, Ås is a historical maker's name, not a secure attribution for every old green bottle. Colour, irregular shape, bubbles and wear alone establish neither factory nor year. When cataloguing, record dimensions, base, lip, forming traces and known ownership history with photographs. A comparison with a historical drawing may help identify a shape, but cannot by itself prove where a particular surviving example was made.
