Maker

Askeland

Askeland is a watchmaking and retail business in Stavanger with roots in 1904. Its own history records that Lauritz Johan Askeland opened a shop at Søregaden 18 that year, selling items including cylinder watches, alarm clocks and chains. John Askeland took over in 1948. This documents a watchmaker's shop, rather than the establishment of an independent watch factory.

The business combines watch and jewellery sales with watchmaking services. Askeland also describes an authorised Rolex service centre. Servicing and retailing another brand's watches must be distinguished from manufacturing them.

For older objects, an original receipt, guarantee document or service history may help establish a sale or maintenance work. An Askeland box alone does not establish the maker, production year or origin of a movement. Check names and references on the watch itself, and assess whether its accompanying documents actually belong to that example.
