Åsnes Glassworks (Aasnæs Glasværk)
Åsnes Glassworks was a historical glassworks at Sjøåsen in Namdalen, Trøndelag. Aasnæs Glasværk is a historical form of its name. Steinkjerleksikonet gives its founding year as 1813. This location should not be confused with Åsnes municipality in Innlandet.
The connection with fishing floats
SNL's specialist article on floats discusses production at Åsnes in the 1840s and dates round glass fishing floats there to 1847. This concerns the works' production history, not the date of a particular unmarked ball. A manufacturer's name and an object type represent different levels of identification.
A name is not a style
Use the name for the historical business, not as a loose description of all green or older glass from Namdalen. An object could have been sold or used locally without being manufactured there. Likewise, discovery near a former industrial site is supporting information, not conclusive attribution to the works.
What should be examined?
Photograph letters, symbols, form, base and any finishing points. Compare markings with documented evidence before assigning a manufacturer. Record dimensions, damage and later attachments. Do not use an indistinct symbol or glass colour as sole proof, or date every object to the works' establishment. State uncertainty rather than turning an assumption into a secure attribution.
