Auction estimate
An auction estimate is a pre-sale assessment of the price range an auction lot might achieve. Christie’s and Sotheby’s describe a range with low and high figures. Relevant factors include identity, condition, documentation and comparable sales.
An assessment before bidding
Distinguish an estimate from the reserve and the actual hammer price. It is neither the buyer's total invoice nor the seller's net payment. Check the particular operator's treatment of prices and additional charges.
Practical example: An estimate of NOK 2,000 to NOK 3,000 expresses an expectation before sale. This is not a valuation of an actual object or a guaranteed result.
For a collection, prepare photographs and a clear object inventory. Explain the purpose of the assessment. See OBA's assessment service to clarify that purpose, or buying and selling if you want a specific purchase offer.
