Beda Maria Johanson

Beda Maria Johanson is the glass artist behind Beda Glass at Verftet in Bergen, Norway. Norske Glasskunstnere also presents her as Beda Johanson. These are name forms associated with the same practice, not two separate glass producers.

In an artist presentation at Neo Galleri, she describes glass in delicate colours with an emphasis on function and everyday use. Kulturhuset USF's artist book documents another aspect of her work: sculptural glass objects blown into damp clay moulds, where contact between glass and mould leaves impressions in the surface. This technique concerns documented works and must not be extended to everything made under Beda Glass.

Identification therefore requires more than colour or an irregular surface. Compare the object with photographs, exhibition information and any purchase records. Note material, measurements and markings, distinguishing intended surface traces from confirmed damage. The sources used here do not provide a general signature guide. A piece should not be attributed to Johanson merely because it is hand-blown or comes from Bergen.
