Cathinka Mæhlum

Cathinka Mæhlum is a Norwegian glass artist associated with Lofoten Glass in Kabelvåg. She grew up in Trondheim and trained at Glasskolan in Sweden. Her practice encompasses functional glass, sculpture and installations. The artist's name and Lofoten Glass are therefore connected references to an individual and her business.

The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts' studio visit describes inspiration from colours, forms and textures in her local natural environment. Norske glasskunstnere presents wine glasses, drinking glasses, bowls and a tilting carafe developed during her training. Her Aurorakula takes the northern lights as an artistic idea. These examples illustrate the breadth of her practice, rather than constituting a catalogue of every version or a method of dating them.

Collectors should record receipts, work titles, dimensions, known production years and any signatures. Distinguish documented provenance for the particular object from a general resemblance to northern-lights motifs or other Lofoten glass. An artistic description of natural phenomena does not alone establish the techniques or combinations of materials used in every individual work.
