Chopard
Chopard is a Swiss name associated with both watches and jewellery. The official history states that Louis-Ulysse Chopard founded a watch manufacture in Sonvilier in 1860, specialising in pocket watches and chronometers.
Brand, collection and object
The Chopard name appears on different product types and collections. A pocket watch, wristwatch and piece of jewellery therefore require different methods of examination. Model names and anniversary dates should not be treated as automatic manufacturing dates.
Documenting an older Chopard object
For watches, assess the reference, calibre, serial number, case and dial together. For jewellery, record the material, fineness marks, maker marks and construction. A box or receipt may document sales history without proving that every component originally belonged together. Service, changed parts and repairs should be recorded separately.
