Diamond
Diamond is a carbon mineral with a particular crystal structure. Jewellery can contain natural or laboratory-grown diamonds. Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds, but a different growth history.
Diamond has a Mohs hardness of 10. Hardness describes resistance to scratching, not resistance to every kind of damage. A hard impact can cause chipping or breakage. An older diamond jewel should therefore be assessed for the condition of both stone and setting before wear or cleaning.
Distinguish a laboratory-grown diamond from a diamond imitation, which merely resembles diamond. A clear, sparkling appearance also cannot establish whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown. GIA describes the need for professional examination and suitable equipment.
Assessment considers factors including weight, colour, clarity and cut, but material identity and quality are different questions. Keep any grading report with receipts. The report does not itself state market value, and a historical purchase price is not a current purchase offer.
