Wood veneer in furniture

Wood veneer consists of thin sheets of real wood. Gluing these sheets to a supporting material creates a veneered surface. Its wood species and grain pattern therefore do not necessarily describe the material throughout the furniture component. Examine both surface and construction when identifying a cabinet, table or other piece.

Veneer, solid wood and plywood

Norwegian wood research institute Treteknisk describes rotary-cut and sliced veneer, including slicing for decorative surfaces. Furniture manufacturer Skovby explains how similar veneer leaves can be arranged, for example by turning alternate leaves to create a symmetrical pattern. This is a documented production example, not reliable manufacturer attribution for an unidentified object.

Plywood is a panel composed of several glued veneer layers with alternating grain directions. It differs from a single decorative veneer layer on furniture. Skovby describes using particleboard and MDF as substrates in its own production. That must not be treated as a universal description of older veneered furniture.

What should be examined?

Photograph edges, corners and existing damage without lifting or breaking away veneer. Record losses, loose areas, stains and previous repairs in a condition report. A thin wood layer allows less material removal than a thick piece. Establish the finish and preservation needs before sanding, wetting or gluing; see conservation and restoration.
