Turf-paring hoe (flåhakke)
A flåhakke is a turf-paring hoe with a broad, thin blade set across its handle. It was used to remove turf, cut away tussocks and level ground. It could also remove the upper moss layer before peat cutting.
Form and identification
Blade outlines vary. Its broad cutting blade distinguishes it from a tined fork, but a detached iron head should not be identified solely by its silhouette.
Recording an example
Photograph the blade and handle attachment, noting dimensions, edge wear and repairs. Farm provenance and evidence of use can clarify its purpose. Record a replacement handle as later when supported by evidence. Rust, forging marks or simple workmanship alone cannot establish age or maker.
