Glass fusing

Fusing joins pieces of glass by heating them until they bond. In glass art, the term commonly refers to joining glass in a kiln. It is used for images and decorative objects within the broader field of glass. Fusing describes a process, not a particular manufacturer.

Fusing and other kiln processes

A light fuse, often called tack fusing, can leave the pieces in distinct relief. In a full fuse they flow together more thoroughly. Slumping instead bends or lowers heated glass into or over a mould. A platter can therefore be fused and then shaped in a later operation.

The glass components must be compatible. Manufacturer Bullseye stresses that a matching coefficient of expansion alone does not establish compatibility between different glasses. This technical figure should not be treated as a simple guarantee for an unidentified object.

What should be recorded?

Describe the dimensions, thickness, surface, visible layers and any signature. Record chips, cracks and repairs in a condition report. Appearance may provide clues to the process, but does not establish who made the work.
