Glasshytta Vikten
Glasshytta Vikten is a glass studio at Vikten in Lofoten associated with Åsvar Tangrand's craft work. The studio's own history records the installation of a melting furnace in its basement workshop in 1976 and the move of glass production to a new building in 1992.
Glass, stone and metal
Visit Lofoten describes a rustic character and pieces combining glass with stone or metal. It presents his son Anders Tangrand as a glassblower at the studio. A workshop name nevertheless does not itself identify father or son as the individual designer or maker of a particular piece.
What is Lofotruna?
Lofotruna is a motif developed by Åsvar Tangrand incorporating a human figure, a fish and a boat. It was made as wall decoration in wrought iron and glass. Its name should not be confused with a claim that an object is an archaeological artefact or an ancient runic inscription.
Assessing an individual piece
Document form, dimensions, underside, labels and signatures. Compare a confirmed piece before attributing an unmarked example to Vikten. Rustic character does not make every irregularity damage, but cracks and chips must still be described. Examine connections between glass and other materials too. Distinguish the studio's founding history from an object's production year and specify what is actually documented.
