Diamond grading report

A diamond grading report describes the characteristics and quality information established by examining a stone. It should be distinguished from a monetary appraisal. GIA explicitly states that its reports do not provide an appraisal value and should not be described as guarantees or certification.

For example, the GIA Diamond Grading Report includes assessment of the four Cs, colour, clarity, cut and carat weight, together with a plotted clarity diagram. Other report types can contain different information. Check the exact report name, the stones it applies to and the details actually recorded. Do not transfer one report type's specifications to every diamond report.

Keep the report number, date and measurements with the jewellery's other documentation. GIA explains that an examination uses the methods available when the stone was examined, and later examinations may produce different results. The report must also be associated with the correct stone; a document alone is not an examination of the jewellery in hand.

GIA directs readers to Report Check for current report information. Such a lookup should not be confused with a market valuation or an assessment of insurance value.

When enquiring about diamond jewellery, include photographs and any reports. Read about valuation at OBA to clarify the assignment, or browse jewellery in the shop.
