Gry Grindbakken
Gry Grindbakken is a Norwegian master filigree silversmith and craft artist with a workshop in Stathelle. Her practice includes traditional costume silver and new designs. Filigree ornaments are built from shaped metal wire, so the wirework, its joins and the overall structure all matter when examining a piece.
During her fellowship at the Norwegian Crafts Institute from 2015 to 2018, she studied surviving costume jewellery from Telemark. The research included reconstructing objects and investigating the working methods behind them. A historical original and a newly made reconstruction therefore require different descriptions.
Collectors should assess maker documentation and actual workmanship rather than relying on a general resemblance to old bunad jewellery. A reconstruction may demonstrate substantial craft skill without being an antique. On a brooch, check that pendants are complete, joints remain secure and replacement parts are identified. A particular hallmark should not be attributed to Grindbakken without separate evidence.
