Gudmund Elvestad

Gudmund Elvestad (1932 to 2006), also known as Gudmund Jon Elvestad, was a Norwegian goldsmith and industrial designer. He was chief designer at J. Tostrup from 1960 to 1968. His work encompassed metalwork, industrial design and teaching.

The National Museum's vase NMK.2009.0115 provides a documented example. The museum dates it to about 1962, records raised silver and names J. Tostrup as manufacturer. These details distinguish designer from producing firm. The vase entered the collection through purchase in 2009, which is not its manufacturing date.

When assessing jewellery or hollowware, document both designer and producing company. A Tostrup mark alone does not prove that Elvestad designed an object. Compare an identified model or authoritative catalogue record, recording dimensions, materials, signatures and provenance. Resemblance to post-war modernism provides a research lead rather than secure attribution.
