Maker

Gullsmed Christophersen

Gullsmed Christophersen originated in Einar Christophersen's silver workshop in Stavanger in 1914. He opened a shop in Sandnes the following year. The company's history includes both its own production and later jewellery imports, making it important to distinguish its different roles.

Workshop and trade

A piece sold by a goldsmith's shop was not necessarily manufactured in that shop's own workshop. A receipt or case carrying the Christophersen name primarily establishes a documented connection with the sale. Manufacturer attribution requires evidence about the object itself and its marks.

A personal name is not enough

Einar Christophersen was the founder, while the family subsequently continued the business. Do not record the founder as the individual maker of a later piece simply because his name appears in the business history. Designer, manufacturer and retailer can be three different parties.

Documentation for collectors

Record all visible letters and symbols, fineness marks, any model number and known purchase details. Photograph the clasp, reverse and joints closely. This overview does not establish a particular historical responsibility punch. Comparison with dated catalogues or other model-specific documentation is more reliable than attribution from initials or a common jewellery shape alone.
