J. Gjertsen jewellers, Bergen

J. Gjertsen jewellers belongs to the watch and jewellery business at Galleriet in Bergen. The firm's own history dates Johnny Gjertsen's watchmaking shop to 1979. The separate jewellery shop, J. Gjertsen Gull, followed in 2001. The watch business's beginning should therefore not be used as the jewellery shop's opening date.

The business combines retailing outside jewellery brands with professional services. Its own presentation and Galleriet's shop directory describe jewellery repairs, resetting alliance rings, restringing pearl necklaces and engraving. A jewel may therefore have passed through the firm either as merchandise or as a repair commission.

This distinction matters to collectors. A Gjertsen-branded box suggests a possible retailer connection, while workshop paperwork may describe a later alteration. Neither alone proves manufacture of the complete object. Record the jewel's own marks and compare them with receipts and any model information. Do not infer a particular responsibility mark from a shop name or watchmaker's label.
