Gullsmed K. E. Sando
From Nesbyen to Rjukan
K. E. Sando is a Norwegian goldsmith business with roots in Hallingdal. According to its own history, Kolbjørn Sando opened a workshop and shop in Nesbyen in 1901. In 1911 he purchased a goldsmith and watchmaker business in Rjukan. The year 1901 therefore does not date the opening in Rjukan.
Craftsmanship and bunad silver
The history describes early filigree work and the later transmission of goldsmithing and hand-engraving skills within the family. The company has a strong connection with bunad silver but also describes cooperation with other Norwegian makers. A piece sold by Sando was therefore not necessarily made in its own workshop.
Company, individual and mark
The name K. E. Sando belongs within the history of a business spanning several generations. The company name alone does not establish who designed, engraved or physically made a particular component. Even when a company history mentions a mark, comparison with a documented punch is needed before an indistinct impression can be assigned.
Preserve information from cases, receipts and family history, but record it separately from confirmed manufacturer information. Photograph marks, construction, loose parts and repairs. An inscription may commemorate a gift or later event rather than manufacture.
