Maker

K. O. Liberg (Hamar jeweller)

K. O. Liberg is a jewellery business in Hamar, established by Karenius Olsen Liberg in 1900 and continued as a family firm. It describes both an in-house workshop offering repairs, remodelling and engraving, and the sale of goods from Norwegian and overseas suppliers.

Retailer or executing workshop?

The Liberg name can therefore be relevant at several stages in a jewel's history. When identifying an object, separate where it was purchased from who designed or manufactured it. A retailer's name on a case alone does not establish the maker of its contents.

Documenting older pieces

Photograph all marks on the object and retain its case, receipt and information about subsequent workshop work. Describe documented sale, repair and manufacture separately. Do not attribute an unidentified initials mark to Liberg without a specific hallmark source. Having a workshop does not mean that every item sold was made by the business.
