Gullsmed Stamnæss
Gullsmed Stamnæss is a jewellery business in Ålesund, Norway, whose own history dates its origins to 1892. It operates a shop and its own workshop. When researching older jewellery and bunad silver, distinguish the retailer's name from the maker of a particular object.
Workshop production and other brands
The workshop states that it makes its own silver ornaments for the Sunnmøre bunad. A documented product listing shows a brooch with twelve hanging leaves and identifies Stamnæss as supplier. The shop also carries other brands, including Sylvsmidja. Purchase from Stamnæss alone therefore does not establish manufacture in its workshop.
Examining an individual piece
Photograph the front, back, leaves, fastening and marks. Compare the object with a documented model, specifying whether evidence identifies a supplier, maker or later repairer. A box or receipt can support provenance but cannot replace examination of the object. Do not assign a letter combination or responsibility mark to Stamnæss without separate documentation.
