Hamilton
Hamilton is a watch brand originating in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where the company was founded in 1892. Early production included pocket watches, and the brand has a historical connection with American railways. A dial name is nevertheless only the starting point for identifying an individual timepiece.
Ventura and electric operation
The Ventura of 1957 is a notable example from Hamilton's history. The original model used electric operation with an electromagnetic coil. It should not automatically be described as a quartz watch. A model name and recognisable case shape are also insufficient to determine the movement type inside a particular example.
Assessing older Hamilton watches
Record model references, any serial numbers and the movement calibre. Compare the case, dial and movement with documentation for the relevant variant. A historical railway connection does not mean that every Hamilton pocket watch was approved for railway use. Check for refinished dials, replacement hands or crowns and the service work actually documented. A watch that runs has not necessarily been fully checked. Do not assume an older case is water-resistant, and have a specialist open watches that require particular tools.
