Hanhart

Hanhart is a watch brand whose origins lie in Johann Adolf Hanhart's watch business in Diessenhofen, Switzerland, in 1882. The business moved to Schwenningen, Germany, in 1902. The name is particularly associated with mechanical stopwatches and wrist chronographs.

Two kinds of timing

A stopwatch measures an elapsed interval; a wrist chronograph combines normal time display with a stopwatch function. Hanhart's history records its stopwatch development from 1924 and the single-pusher chronograph Calibre 40 from 1938. A calibre name identifies a movement type, not automatically the production year of every watch using it.

Documenting an older watch

Examine dial, case, movement markings and pushers together. A brand's military history does not prove that an individual watch was issued to a particular unit. Modern reissues must not be represented as wartime originals. A specialist condition assessment should include starting, stopping and resetting: a running watch can still have a defective chronograph mechanism.
