Heinrich Gottlieb Köhler

Heinrich Gottlieb Köhler was a German glass engraver and draughtsman with an important role at eighteenth-century Nøstetangen glassworks. Nøstetangen Norsk Glassmuseum describes engraving, sorting and drawing designs for centrepieces and chandeliers among his duties. His name identifies a person associated with the factory, not a separate glassworks.

Norway's National Museum documents No XVIII. Reperbane, a wine glass dated 1771, naming Nøstetangen as manufacturer and Köhler as artist. Part of the Holter series, it is described as blown glass with engraved decoration. The record distinguishes factory manufacture from artistic surface work.

For attribution, examine subject, composition, technique and provenance together. An engraved monogram or Rococo frame alone cannot establish Köhler's authorship. Compare documented objects and distinguish design, glassblowing and subsequent engraving. A museum inventory number identifies an object rather than dating its manufacture. This article follows the name used in the National Museum's collection and avoids uncertain biographical dates.
