Høvre (horse harness fitting)

A høvre is a horse harness component positioned just behind the withers. An arch or plate rests on two bearing pads, with reins passing through holes or metal rings. Associated straps transfer weight from the shafts to the horse's back.

Working equipment and folk art

Wooden examples occur in both arched and plate forms. They may be carved and painted, making them relevant to folk art as well as transport history. A detached høvre is one component, rather than a complete harness.

What should be recorded?

Describe the wood, metal fittings, paint and surviving parts. Photograph the underside and any dates or initials too. When attributing an example to a region or craftsperson, state the comparative evidence. Record old repairs and possible overpainting instead of deriving a definite age from decorative style alone. Avoid aggressive cleaning of painted surfaces before assessing their condition.
