Ida Siebke
Ida Siebke is a Norwegian glass artist and glassblower, also referred to as Ida-Christel Siebke. Her studies include Kosta Glascenter in Sweden, Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and Einar Granum Kunstfagskole in Oslo. She completed her Norwegian craft qualification in glassmaking in 2014.
Functional glass and conceptual art
Her practice has two strands: functional glassware for everyday use and artworks for exhibition. In her own statement, Siebke describes surroundings, nature and encounters with people as sources for functional glass, while personal emotions and the human psyche inform her sculptural work. Norwegian Crafts documents this dual practice in a studio visit published in January 2023.
Technique and identification
Norske Glasskunstnere describes a specific example of Siebke blowing drinking glasses into snow to texture their exterior. It demonstrates that an irregular surface can be part of a documented artistic process. It does not mean that every rough surface on an unidentified glass was made this way or can be attributed to her. Examine any marking, title, receipt and provenance alongside form, colour and condition. Intended texture and subsequent damage require separate assessment for each object.
