Maker

J. Eide & Co. (Gullsmed Eide)

A goldsmith business and workshop in Os

J. Eide & Co., also known as Gullsmed Eide, is a goldsmith business with a workshop and shop in Os. Its own presentation dates the business to 1943. The name should be investigated as a company name, not automatically as the signature of one individual goldsmith.

Own designs and local connections

The workshop describes its own jewellery collections and bunad silver cast on site. Its own-product presentation includes the Os-sølja brooch, the Forn collection inspired by archaeological finds from Os, Fusa and Kvinnherad, and jewellery featuring the Oselver boat. Historical inspiration does not make the jewellery itself an archaeological find or an early original.

What can establish the maker?

When assessing an older piece, compare any company name with the model, marks and documented purchase history. Distinguish in-house production from goods retailed by the company and objects that merely passed through its workshop for repair.

Photograph every mark and the complete object, including its reverse, clasp and later interventions. Similar decoration or an isolated initial is insufficient to attribute an object to J. Eide & Co. This overview does not establish a specific historical responsibility punch or date an unidentified mark.
