Maker

Junghans

Junghans is a German clock and watch manufacturer originating in Schramberg in the Black Forest in 1861. Its history includes larger clocks as well as wristwatches. The name can therefore appear on quite different object types and movements.

Manufacturer and designer

Max Bill is an important designer in Junghans' history, not the name of the manufacturer. The collaboration first included kitchen clocks, followed by wristwatches from 1961. Record Junghans as manufacturer when that attribution is documented. Name Max Bill as designer only when the actual model or design has been confirmed.

Assessing an individual timepiece

Record the model reference, calibre and all visible markings. A simple dial with clean lines is not by itself evidence of a Max Bill design. Compare dimensions, hands, numerals and function placement with documentation for the relevant model. The manufacturer's archive can be a useful starting point, but a similar catalogue illustration is not complete authentication.

Describe the condition of the case, crystal and dial separately. State whether a running test or service has actually been carried out. Do not transfer specifications or water-resistance claims from a new Junghans model to an older watch of similar appearance.

Browse watches and pocket watches.
