Loom weight

Kljåstein are weights used to tension warp threads on a warp weighted loom. Store norske leksikon describes the term especially for soapstone weights, although the word is also used more broadly for loom weights.

Material and form

Soapstone is easy to shape, but loom weights may also be made from other stones or fired clay. They can have holes, grooves or a shape that allows a group of warp threads to be attached. Several weights should have approximately equal mass to maintain even tension.

Not every perforated stone

A loom weight should be identified from its material, working, attachment form, wear and find context. A perforated or grooved stone may have served another purpose, while a genuine loom weight can be plain and irregular. Modern suspension, paint or numbering may be museum marking and should not be mistaken for original decoration.
