Lip

Lip is a French watch brand closely associated with Besançon. Musée du Temps preserves a 1947 Lip advertisement showing T18 and T12 watches and the company's own reference to watchmaking since 1867. The advertisement documents what the brand presented at that time.

The museum also holds a barrel-shaped T18 movement. Its catalogue attributes the calibre's development in 1933 to André Donat. Here Lip is the maker's name, while T18 identifies a particular movement rather than a feature shared by every watch from the brand.

For an older Lip watch, compare dial lettering, case information and the actual movement. A model name on a sales label is insufficient proof of the calibre. Request clear photographs and service records. Also distinguish a historical original from a later watch using a familiar name or similar shape. The museum's dating of one movement does not automatically date another example.
