Scythe snath
A scythe snath is the shaft to which a scythe blade is attached. It allows the mower to guide the blade in a controlled arc close to the ground. Norwegian snaths occur in several regional and functional forms.
Long and short forms
A long snath is used with both hands and normally has one or two grips. A short snath is used in one hand while the other may gather or hold vegetation. Shape, length and grips vary with working method and local tradition.
Assessment
Inspect the blade fitting, grips, wood, repairs and wear. A missing blade affects use and display, although the shaft can still document toolmaking. Initials and dates are inscriptions and should not automatically be treated as secure production records.
