Luminox

Luminox is a watch brand established in 1989, known for legible sports watches with self-powered luminous markers. Its own history describes development work with Nick North, associated with the US Navy SEALs, from 1992. Brand history and the provenance of an individual watch are separate matters.

LLT and other lighting systems

Luminox Light Technology, or LLT, uses small sealed glass tubes that glow without charging from daylight or a lamp. This distinguishes the system from light-charged coatings such as Super-LumiNova. The illumination and the movement have separate energy requirements. Marker placement and other features must be checked for the particular model.

Examining a used watch

The reference number, original dial, hands, case back and service history provide useful evidence when buying or describing a pre-owned example. A Navy SEAL name or military appearance alone does not prove military issue. Do not transfer a new watch's water resistance, materials or specifications to an older example. Assess actual legibility in darkness as well: a general explanation of the technology does not establish an individual watch's condition.
