Flour sieve
A flour sieve separates fine flour from coarser particles. Older examples may have a bent wooden rim with a bottom made from thin wooden strips, perforated skin or horsehair. The name describes the utensil's purpose; it does not specify the material of every example.
For identification, describe both the frame and the actual sieving surface. An old wooden sieve with its bottom missing may be difficult to assign to a particular use. Photograph the rim joint, attachments around the bottom and any handles. Do not assign a specific function simply because the shape resembles a museum object.
When buying, record diameter, height, missing sections and repairs. Establish whether the description concerns the original sieving surface or a later replacement. Describe a loose or damaged mesh as found instead of tightening or testing it under load to demonstrate its function. Traditional construction alone does not provide a secure date.
