Moss Glassworks
Moss Glassworks, also written Moss Glasværk, was a Norwegian glass manufacturer on Jeløya in Moss. Founded in 1898, it made products including drinks bottles and preserving jars. Sweden's PLM group took over in 1989. Glass production ended in 1999, so the ownership change must not be confused with the end of production.
Glassworks and product brand
Norway's National Museum records a Zalo bottle from the mid-1950s with Moss Glasværk as manufacturer of the pictured object. Lilleborg fabrikker is also named in the record. This provides a specific example of why the name of the contents and the packaging manufacturer must be kept separate.
Identifying bottles and jars
Document shape, dimensions, base marks, mould seams and any surviving labels. A familiar product name or similar bottle shape does not by itself establish which glassworks made the container. Preserve qualifications in museum records when a comparison object is only tentatively attributed to a manufacturer.
Condition and collector information
Look for chips at the rim and base, cracks and label damage. Separate manufacturing traces from later damage. A loose label or stopper may have been added later and should not alone be used to date the glass securely. State what has actually been observed and which sources support any manufacturer attribution.
