Spoon auger

A spoon auger is a traditional hand drill for wood. Store norske leksikon describes the Norwegian navar as a conical, spiralling forged bit whose cutting edge forms the hole while its shape carries chips away.

Construction and use

The tool has a cutting section, shank and tang. The tang enters a transverse wooden handle. Different sizes were used for peg holes, pilot holes and work on log buildings. Norwegian names such as husnavar and vidjenavar refer to use or form.

Examining an older tool

Look for a forged surface, the form of the cutting edge and back, the attachment to the handle and wear consistent with use. A newer handle can be fitted to an older bit, while a carved date may be an ownership mark. Distinguish the tool from modern twist drills and other hand drills. Do not test a rusty or loose example before checking its tang and handle.
