Norgesglass preserving jar

Norgesglass is known as a preserving jar with the name Norge moulded into the glass. The classic version has a glass lid, rubber sealing ring and metal screw band. Different sizes, openings and lid arrangements exist, so the name does not guarantee that all components are interchangeable.

Historical jars and a modern brand

Christiania Glasmagasin marketed preserving jars in 1902. SNL records the Norge name on the lid in 1906 and on the jar itself in 1908. Drammens Glassverk began production in 1908, and Moss Glassverk made Norgesglass from 1949. This history involves several glassworks and changes in design, not one unchanged model from a single manufacturer.

According to SNL, the earlier production ended in 1978. The brand was relaunched in 2014 and also covers modern products. The Norge name alone therefore proves neither substantial age nor Norwegian manufacture of a particular example.

What should be recorded?

Photograph lettering, base, lid and screw band. Record capacity, opening and any maker's marks. Lids can be replaced, and an older jar may have a newer seal or band. Do not date the entire assembly confidently from a single detachable part.

For collecting purposes, describe rim chips, cracks, corrosion and missing parts. A jar's previous use for preserving food does not itself establish its present suitability for food preservation. See also Drammens Glassverk and Moss Glassverk.
