Nøstepinne (yarn-winding stick)
What is a nøstepinne?
A nøstepinne is a hand tool for winding yarn. It has a handle and a working section around which the yarn is wrapped. Once removed, the ball can supply yarn from its centre. It is not the same as a yarn swift, which holds the skein during winding.
Household tool and woodcarving
Norges Husflidslag describes simple examples and decorated sticks that could serve as betrothal gifts. Decoration is concentrated on the handle. Vesterheim refers to historical examples with chip carving, relief carving and pierced ornament, including loose rings or balls within carved cages.
Elaborate decoration does not by itself prove age. Nøstepinner are still made, and Vesterheim uses historical examples as inspiration for new work. Distinguish a documented older object from a recent tool made in a traditional style.
Examination and documentation
Photograph the complete stick, working section and all sides of the handle. Record inscriptions, cracks, wear and repairs without treating any single feature as proof of age. Do not press fragile carved connections or loose elements to test how they were made.
If the origin is uncertain, ownership history and comparable museum objects should carry more weight than a familiar ornament alone. Browse our wooden objects.
