Øivind Modahl

Øivind Modahl (1916 to 1981) was a Norwegian goldsmith and gemmologist. He was the son of goldsmith Einar Modahl and should be distinguished from his father. Norsk kunstnerleksikon records that he established his own Oslo workshop in 1955.

The National Museum documents a necklace by Øivind Modahl dated 1970, inventory number NMK.2008.0592. Its materials are silver and rock crystal, with cutting, forging, soldering and polishing listed in the catalogue. These details concern one particular work, not the materials of everything he made.

When assessing a possible Modahl jewel, examine stone, setting, construction and documentation together. Resemblance to a museum object provides a comparison, not independent proof of authorship. Photograph the complete piece and every inscription. State whether an attribution rests on a receipt, exhibition history or another identifiable source. The surname Modahl alone cannot distinguish him from his father or the Einar Modahl firm. A design centred on a stone does not establish who actually made it. This article attributes no particular responsibility mark.
