Reuse and material recycling

Reuse means using a product again for the same purpose without substantial reprocessing. Material recycling processes waste into material for new products. A chair that changes owners and remains in use as a chair is a simple reuse example. Turning material from a discarded item into new raw material is a different process.

Why the distinction matters during clearance

Assess usable household contents before mixing them with waste. Make an object inventory and decide which items should be kept, assessed for sale or passed on. For example, consider a complete dinner service as a group before separating pieces into different boxes. This is practical advice, not a guarantee of sale value or acceptance by a recipient.

The Norwegian Environment Agency also distinguishes reuse from preparation for reuse. The latter involves checking discarded products and repairing them where necessary before further use. In Norwegian waste terminology, gjenvinning covers both material recycling and energy recovery. Burning waste with energy recovery is therefore not material recycling.

Agree the recipient and scope

A reusable object is not necessarily suitable for every secondhand shop. Establish its condition, completeness and what the recipient actually accepts. For valuable or fragile pieces, consider preservation before refurbishment; see conservation and restoration.

To offer items for sale, send photographs through OBA's buying and selling page. For larger estates, request a site visit to establish what may be purchased and what clearance work is agreed.
