Omega
What is Omega?
Omega is a Swiss watch brand whose origins lie in Louis Brandt's business of 1848. The name comes from the Omega movement introduced in 1894 and was subsequently adopted by the company. A date in the company's history does not date an individual watch.
Model names and reissues
The Speedmaster was introduced in 1957. Reference CK 2998 followed in 1959 and was worn by Wally Schirra on the Sigma 7 mission in 1962. Omega has since made new interpretations of this model, including one in 2024. Historic styling or a commemorative engraving alone therefore does not establish manufacture in the 1950s or 1960s.
What should be recorded?
When examining an older watch, consider its reference, movement calibre, serial number, dial, hands and case together. Ask a watchmaker to document concealed numbers if opening the case is necessary. Record replaced parts or a restored dial, and distinguish established originality from assumptions.
Master Chronometer is a more recent certification introduced by Omega in 2015. It must not be attributed to older watches merely because they share the brand name. Request a documented assessment of the particular watch's function and condition.
