Potato hoe (potetgrev)

A potetgrev is a hand hoe used to dig up potatoes. Nynorskordboka defines it as a single-bladed digging tool. Store norske leksikon describes the grev as having a relatively narrow, pointed oval blade and wooden handle, and records potato harvesting with it before horse-drawn lifting machines.

Hoe or fork?

A single blade differs from a fork's tines. Record local terminology alongside the actual shape rather than relying on a name alone.

Examination

Note blade width and profile, attachment, handle length and repairs. The broad label hoe cannot establish a particular tool's former use. Documented working history is therefore valuable. Rust or a hand-forged appearance alone cannot establish age, a local smith or place of manufacture.
