Pulsar

Pulsar is a watch brand name with several historical contexts. Hamilton presented its electronic digital watch in 1970, and the Pulsar P1 reached the market in 1972. The early watch is quartz-controlled and displays time using light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. A button lights the numerals briefly to limit battery consumption.

The name also appears on later watches from a different period. Museums Victoria holds a Pulsar catalogue dated 2001 with Seiko listed as manufacturer and distributor. A later Pulsar should therefore not automatically be described as Hamilton's original LED watch. Hamilton's 2020 PSR is also a reinterpretation using a different display solution, rather than an old Pulsar example from the 1970s.

When assessing one, identify the case, case back, module or movement and display together. Distinguish luminous LED numerals from an LCD display and from ordinary hands. Document whether display, buttons and time-setting work, and any known electronic damage. Original paperwork and correct components may be more useful for identification than a general account of the brand's history.
