Rattrapante (split-seconds chronograph)

A rattrapante is a chronograph with an additional timing seconds hand. Two hands initially run together. One can be stopped to read an intermediate time while the other continues timing. The stopped hand can then catch up with the moving hand. The function is also known as split-seconds.

What is it used for?

It allows comparison of events that begin together but finish at different times. A practical example is two runners starting together and reaching the finish separately. The first time can be recorded without interrupting measurement until the second runner finishes.

This is an additional chronograph function, not a feature established merely by several small counters on a dial. Timing range, operation and which counters have a split function must be checked for the specific model. Modern watches with split minutes or hours do not establish that an older watch has the same functions.

Checking a second-hand watch

Identify the reference, movement and correct instructions before trying the functions. Manufacturer descriptions show different pusher and counter arrangements. Do not identify the watch type from a pusher’s position alone. With unknown condition, have a watchmaker assess the function before operating it.

Record whether starting, reading intermediate times, catching up and resetting have actually been examined. Dial photographs and known service documents provide a better basis than an unverified description in a sales listing.

Next step

Browse OBA’s wristwatches and read the information for each watch. To offer a watch for sale, send OBA photographs and the reference for assessment of a possible purchase. State clearly which functions have been checked.
