Robert Gube

Robert Gube was a glass engraver and painter who arrived at Hadeland Glassverk in Jevnaker in September 1855. He worked on glass decoration. His name identifies a person associated with the factory, rather than a separate glassworks. Norsk kunstnerleksikon discusses both engraving and glass painting in his practice.

Norway's National Museum documents a specific plaque dated 1872, inventory number OK-1966-0009, listing Rob. Gube as artist and Hadeland Glassverk as manufacturer. Its material is described as cut and engraved glass. The record illustrates the distinction between artistic surface work and the factory producing the object.

When cataloguing older decorated glass, record technique, subject, signatures and provenance separately. Painting applies colour, whereas engraving creates decoration by working the surface. Neither a painted nor an engraved motif alone establishes Gube's authorship. A museum attribution for one plaque cannot be transferred to all similar Hadeland objects. Although the inventory number contains 1966, that is not the object's production date: the museum dates it to 1872.
