Spinning wheel

A spinning wheel is a textile tool for spinning yarn from fibres such as wool or flax. On a common treadle wheel, a pedal and crank turn the large wheel. The drive band transfers motion to spindle and bobbin so the thread is twisted and wound in one operation.

Parts and variants

The table, legs, wheel, treadle, crank, supports, bobbin and flyer are central parts. Upright wheels, great wheels and other forms work differently and should not all be judged by one construction.

Assessment

Check whether wheel, axle, treadle, flyer, bobbin and tensioning parts survive and belong together. Drive bands and some working parts are consumable and may be replaced. Paint, inscriptions, wear and repairs can document use but require careful interpretation.
