Rolex

Rolex is a Swiss watch brand rooted in the company Hans Wilsdorf established in London in 1905. The Rolex name was registered in 1908. Operations moved to Geneva in 1919 and Montres Rolex S.A. was registered there in 1920.

Historical features

Rolex introduced the water resistant Oyster case in 1926. In 1931 it followed with a self winding wristwatch using a freely rotating rotor. These developments are central to the brand's history, but names and construction vary by model and period.

Identification

Dial, case, movement, reference and serial number must be assessed together. A name on the dial does not prove authenticity. Replacement parts, restoration and composite watches occur, while value depends strongly on model, condition and documentation.
