Royal Copenhagen was founded in Denmark in 1775 under royal patronage and became one of the best-known names in Danish porcelain, associated with craftsmanship, hand-painted decoration and blue-and-white tableware.
Marks and dating
The three blue waves have formed part of its identity since 1775 and, according to Royal Copenhagen, represent the Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. Pieces may also carry a crown, model or pattern details and a painter’s mark. Backstamps changed over time and should be read with shape, decoration and workmanship.
Condition and collector interest
Check for chips, hairlines, crazing, staining, decoration wear, restoration and indications of secondary quality. Demand varies by pattern, model, period and designer.
